What is universal design?

Universal design refers to affordable creation and modification of accessible buildings enabling access and safety for all people in their homes and communities.  Universal design applies to the interior and exterior of a location, including appliances, equipment, lighting and durable medical equipment.

What is “visit-able”?

“Visit-able” means accessible to everyone.  The following standards have been established for a place to be considered “visit-able”.

• one zero-step entrance on an accessible path of travel
• doorways 32 inches clear throughout the floor plan
• basic access to at least a half-bath on the main level

What does a geriatric care manager do?

A geriatric care manager works together with older adults, their families and friends to develop a comprehensive care plan to achieve ideal conditions of daily living.  The geriatric care manager locates optimum solutions, offering recommendations for your priorities.  Specific services may be short term or on-going and could include:

• Communication with long-distance family, friends, guardians
• Prevention services enabling safe, independent “aging in place”
• Liaison with health care, legal, financial, and community support professionals
• Management of medications with health care professionals
• Planning of alternative living options and relocation
• Organization of personal, medical, legal, financial documents
